Khor Arbaat Earth Dams:-
The catchment area of khor Arbaat is by far the largest of any water course in the vicinity of portsudan and so has been the subject of several proposals for reservoirs also the huge amount of water is the catchment area attracts the attention many researchers such Garbham,1907,Kabash1959 ,Gibb and partners1968,BundesanhaltGR,1980 Montgory1987, and GRAS,1991,in order to harvest these quantities of water so as to supply portsides town with sufficient water .These studies made investigation for two sites of Dams .One at the upper gate and the other at 3.2Km up stream of the upper gate.
Dam at the upper gate:
Montgomory (1987) proposed adam20m height at the upper gate to store about 5Mm .This small volume of storage water is attributed to the limited topographical area where the gorge is only 30wide. This site is an obvious site for amad being narrow and with good qual ity rock (granite) for the abutment currently adam at this site have been constructed in (2003) to store the above mentioned amounts. It is part of a cascade system of mad that constructed at 3.2Km. Upstream of the upper gate.
The constructed dam solued the water supples problems in Port Sudan at least at the time being this dam faced with the chronic siltation and scarcity of the rainfall.

This site was proposed by Bun GR(1980)and subsequently investigated by GRAS (1991) and detailed study was done by shora consult in (2001).The dam site is wider(160m) than the upper gate (30m) so the quantity of water stored in the reservoir would be much greater.
It designed t o store about 16Mm of water at ahead of 24m. The effective capacity of the dam fluctuates depending on the flow rates of Khor Arbaat which depending of rainfall quantity at the catchment area.
